J&J Held Accountable For Missing Vaginal Mesh Docs

December 2013 — Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon unit has been accused of destroying documents containing vital information in regards to vaginal mesh implants.

Missing Files May Benefit Defendant

The lost documents, which date back to 10 years ago, are claimed to have been removed from former Ethicon President, Renee Salman’s hard drive. Reasons behind the destruction of vaginal mesh documents are unknown however, attorneys state that the missing files provide the defendants with the opportunity to manipulate victim’s stories.

Ethicon stated that they failed to successfully preserve their hard drive which led to the devastating loss of key information relating to company policies as well as their communication with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The news of document destruction came just two months before bellwether trials were anticipating their commencement against Ethicon.

Ethicon Lawsuits

In June 2012, Johnson & Johnson seized sales of vaginal mesh after filed lawsuits credited the company’s product with irregular bleeding and infections. Victims claim the devices were defectively produced and that Ethicon failed to explain the health risks associated with their products to doctors and medical professionals.
